This product by Takuma Yamazaki is one of the few materials with an important relation with nature. That is apparent in the following three characteristics.
1.Maintaining the original shape of the living material.
2.The material returning to the earth as next resource.
3.The season to make the material is fixed.
Even though we take a life from nature, we cannot get the impression of life from the product itself. For example, pigs are not only used for their meat, lipstick soft candy and even soap can be produced from their bodily substances. Many of the products we use in daily life are the product of living things. In our contemporary, subdivided society, it is very difficult to feel this reality.
The reason Bio-Vide was created was to investigate whether one can re-embed this important feeling of life that we have lost sight of, by maintaining the original shape and character of the living things we use in our contemporary products.
The sheet of fallen leaves can be produced in a variety of thicknesses by layering the leaves and combining them using a hot press. By using the pleased leaves in a table or a chair, we can visually convey the idea of the material returning back to the earth. Additionally, we can sense the original characteristics from when it was alive, and anticipate what happens to the material when it reach the end of its life cycle.
